Encounters at Carmel: The Abigail Quest
This encounter table is designed for a tabletop RPG set in the region of Carmel, based on the events of 1 Samuel 25. Players will navigate a series of character interactions, environmental challenges, and divine tests, all while trying to secure an alliance with Abigail, the wise wife of Nabal, against the backdrop of David’s rising influence in the region.

- You stumble upon Nabal, who falsely accuses the party of stealing his sheep. He sends his men to attack. Each man has 12 HP, AC 12, and wields blunt clubs (1d6 damage). The party loses any chance of negotiating with Abigail if they fight back.
- While searching for clues, the party finds a cursed artifact—an idol of Baal. Any player who carries it suffers a -2 to Wisdom checks, and they must make a DC 15 save to resist the urge to worship it.
- A swarm of angry bees, disturbed by noise, attacks, inflicting 1d4 damage on each player. Players must succeed in a DC 12 Constitution save to avoid panic, resulting in a -1 to Dexterity for the rest of the day.
- A local merchant attempts to swindle the party, offering them “holy water” that’s just ordinary water. If the party buys it for 10 shekels, they are unable to trust any future dealings in town, imposing a -2 to all future trading attempts.
Mild Nuisance Encounters (6-10)
- A messenger arrives with false news: King Saul has issued a bounty for David’s head. The party must spend time verifying this, losing a day of travel as they seek confirmation from nearby allies.
- While hunting for supplies, party members find spoiled grain and moldy figs, causing them to suffer a -1 to Constitution checks until they can find fresh food.
- The party hears rumors that Abigal is unapproachable due to her husband’s temper. They must roll a DC 14 Persuasion check to gather reliable information from townsfolk, or risk misinformation.
- As the party travels, they encounter a flock of sheep blocking their path. They must spend an hour herding them away, causing a delay in their journey.
- One member of the party twists their ankle while traversing rocky terrain, resulting in a decrease of 10 feet to their movement speed until they can rest.
Somewhat Helpful Encounters (11-15)
- A local shepherd provides the party with information about Nabal’s wealth and Abigail’s wisdom, granting them a +2 bonus to any negotiation rolls with Abigail.
- The party finds a hidden cache of dried fruits and nuts, providing enough sustenance for the party to regain 1d4 HP after a short rest.
- You encounter a wise elder who relates a proverb: “A foolish man wastes his words, but a wise woman builds her home.” Gain inspiration when negotiating with Abigail.
- A merchant offers to sell the party a map leading to a secret well, allowing them to refill their water supply. The well has pure water and may restore 1d4 HP when used.
- As the party arrives in town, they overhear a conversation about Nabal’s recent poor decisions, granting them a +1 bonus on checks related to Nabal’s character.
Very Helpful Encounters (16-20)
- The party unexpectedly discovers an ancient scroll describing the virtues of wise leadership. Anyone who reads it gains +2 to all leadership-based checks for one week.
- They meet an influential merchant sympathetic to David. He offers 50 shekels in support of David’s cause, if they can convince him of their integrity first (roll Persuasion DC 15).
- The party encounters a wandering prophet who blesses them with wise counsel, giving each member insight and thus +1 to their next Intelligence check.
- Upon arrival, the party is greeted by a group of farmers who are grateful to David for his past protection. They offer provisions that restore 1d6 HP to each party member.
- They find a hidden path that leads directly to Nabal’s estate, bypassing potential delays or dangers. This shortcut saves the party a day’s travel.
Extremely Helpful Encounters (21-25)
- Upon negotiation, Abigail presents the party with a rare blessing, giving them +2 to all Charisma-based checks involving persuasion for the duration of their quest.
- The party is gifted a beautifully crafted wooden staff by Abigail, which grants +1 to Wisdom or +1 to attack when invoked in battle.
- Abigail’s servants provide healing poultices made from herbs and oils, allowing each player to recover 1d8 HP when used during a short rest.
- The party receives a letter of endorsement from Abigail, enabling them to gain favor among local leaders and secure better resources for the rest of their journey.
- An old warrior named Eli accompanies the party, sharing his skills. He provides training sessions, enabling party members to gain an additional +1 to attack rolls for their next encounter.
