Critical Reconstruction
Shortest Construction:
“And said to them, ‘take me and throw me into the sea, and will calm, the sea, from you, for know I do, that on my account the tempest, great, this one, is on you.’”
Longest Construction:
“And said Jonah to them, ‘take me and throw me into the sea, and will calm, the sea, from you, for know I do, that on my account the tempest, great, this one, is on you.’”
Overview:
Surprisingly, this section, while a bit long, does not have much theological development or later explanative material. The only difference is the direct mention of Jonah in the LXX as the person talking. Apart from this, there is virtually no difference.
LBTB: Read Prayerfully
The next step in Bible study is to read with prayer. In a technical study of Jonah, it is important to remember that apart from application to the heart by the Spirit, this study is worthless. Simply knowing facts about the Bible is worthless, unless those facts help your heart to know your Savior more. This is why it is common practice to tie every sermon to the cross. Every time we open God’s Word, we have to remember that it is a practice of knowing our Savior better, not a practice of learning Bible facts. In consistency with this, take some time to pray about this verse. The following is a short example of what it might look like to pray over every verse of the Bible, even short segments like this one. God, thank You for this time to explore Your Word. Thank You that we have Your Word, that we can have confidence in Your Word, and that Your Word pierces between soul and spirit, joint and marrow. It pierces to the heart because it is truth. It is the written revelation of Your Spirit, profitable to make someone ready for every good work. Help me to be equipped for every good work through the study of Jonah. Jonah 1:12 says, “And said to them, ‘take me and throw me into the sea, and the sea will calm from you, for I know that on my account this great tempest is on you.’” Help me to have courage like Jonah. Courage to say, “if this is God’s path, throw me in.” Courage to tell those around me to hold me to the standard You have for me. Courage to take the first step. We thank You for Your Word today, God. Please seal these truths in our hearts, each and every day. Amen.
