Random Encounter Table: Abandoned Streets of Efrat

This table provides encounters that Elior and Shimon may face as they navigate the abandoned streets of Efrat, where bandits are rumored to roam. Each encounter reflects the historical context of the village and the overarching threat of the Philistines.

Hurtful Encounters (1-5)

  1. The party is ambushed by a group of five bandits (Health: 15 each, Attack: +3, AC: 12). They demand their belongings and threaten violence. If they do not comply, they will take 1d6 damage each if they engage in combat.
  2. A runaway cart filled with rocks rolls down the street, hitting Elior. He must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw; on failure, he takes 2d6 damage and is knocked prone.
  3. The party encounters a false trader who offers them “protection” for 10 shekels but is actually leading them into a bandit ambush. If they accept, they will lose their money and face another encounter with the bandits.
  4. As they search for Yair, Elior steps on a hidden trap. He takes 1d4 piercing damage, and they alert nearby bandits.
  5. Suddenly, a wild dog packs jumps out from an alley, attacking Shimon (Health: 12, Attack: +2, AC: 11). If unprovoked, they can avoid confrontation but will lose 1d4 time in their search.

Mild Nuisances (6-10)

  1. The local merchant offers to sell a map of the area but insists on charging 15 shekels, claiming it is ‘rare.’
  2. The party finds an overturned cart filled with spoiled fruits. While searching, they can salvage a handful of edible ones, granting them 1d4 health each if consumed.
  3. A village elder warns them of suspicious movements near the outskirts, providing them a +1 bonus on their next encounter check if they heed his warning.
  4. Someone in the village mistakes Elior for a soldier due to his attire and insists he join a routine village patrol, causing a delay of 1d4 hours.
  5. A local child approaches them, looking for help to find a lost toy. If they assist, they gain +1 Charisma in this village.

Somewhat Helpful Encounters (11-15)

  1. The party finds a small cache of supplies: 5 slings, 2 wooden shields (+1 defense), and a leather-bound map showing paths used by bandits.
  2. A farmer overhears their conversation about Yair and gives them detailed directions, granting +2 on their next tracking check.
  3. The village herbalist offers to give them 3 healing herbs, which can restore 1d4 health each when used.
  4. While searching the market, Shimon discovers a rare item: a flask of olive oil that can be used to set a trap (+2 to attack against bandits).
  5. A friendly merchant offers to sell them a weapon at half price due to the recent unrest, giving them a strong sling (damage +2) for 6 shekels.

Very Helpful Encounters (16-20)

  1. The party meets a former soldier who agrees to lend them an additional hand with insights into guerrilla tactics, granting them +1 on all combat checks for 1d4 encounters.
  2. Upon entering a local tavern, they overhear gossip about Yair’s whereabouts, giving them an advantage in their quest to find him (+2 to their next encounter with Yair).
  3. A traveling priest offers wisdom about faith during warfare, allowing Elior to gain +1 Wisdom for the next encounter.
  4. The party encounters a patrol that offers to escort them through the most dangerous areas, granting them +1 on all stealth checks for the duration of their stay in Efrat.
  5. They find a hidden stash of old weapons: one sturdy sword (+3 attack) and a rusty helmet (+1 AC). They can choose to sell or use them.

Extremely Helpful Encounters (21-25)

  1. They discover a secret meeting of villagers willing to unite against the bandits, gaining +2 on any persuasion or rallying checks in future encounters.
  2. A wise elder offers prophetic advice, hinting at the bandits’ tactics, granting them advantage on their next tactical decision.
  3. The party stumbles upon a small hidden library with scrolls about the Philistines, granting them +2 to their history rolls regarding warfare.
  4. Yair himself appears, impressed by their efforts and agrees to join their cause, increasing their party size and effectiveness by 1 and giving them insights into the Philistine threat.
  5. The villagers rally around them, providing 10 shekels and food supplies, ensuring they are well-equipped for the coming conflict.

Bible Trivia Encounter

As part of their journey, Elior and Shimon must prove their knowledge of the Scriptures. They will encounter a group of local scholars who will quiz them. Correct answers can yield valuable information or assistance.
