Nuanced Encounter Table: 1 Samuel 23

This encounter table is designed for the setting of 1 Samuel 23, where David is on the run from Saul, making his way through the rugged terrain of Judah. As David seeks refuge and allies, players will experience a range of encounters that reflect the urgent and perilous nature of his quest. Each encounter is influenced by the biblical narrative, the historical context of the time, and the cultural dynamics of the region.

Hurting Encounters (1-5)

  • 1. As the party hides in a cave, they are discovered by a band of 20 soldiers loyal to Saul, who attack with a combined strength of 60 HP (AC 15). If the party is overpowered, they lose 5 morale, resulting in a -1 to their next Charisma roll.
  • 2. A local farmer accuses the party of stealing his sheep (5 sheep worth 4 silver pieces each). If confronted, he becomes aggressive, reducing the party’s defenses (-1 AC) until they prove their innocence.
  • 3. The party encounters a false prophet claiming that Saul seeks peace and asks them to return to him. If the party believes him, they will mistakenly head back towards Saul, suffering a setback of 1d4 days in their quest to find safety.
  • 4. As they camp, the party is bitten by venomous snakes while sleeping, causing 1d6 damage each and requiring a successful DC15 Constitution saving throw to avoid further harm.
  • 5. The party overhears treacherous whispers from a local spy who informs Saul of David’s location, putting them in further danger. They lose an ally, and the next location is compromised.

Mild Nuisances (6-10)

  • 6. A wandering minstrel spreads rumors about them, causing a -1 to their next Persuasion check due to mistrust from locals.
  • 7. The party finds a half-burnt letter with instructions from Saul to his men detailing rewards for capturing David. If deciphered, it grants the party +1 on their next Intelligence check, as they understand Saul’s strategy.
  • 8. A shepherd mistakenly leads the party towards a treacherous path, causing them to expend an extra day and gain fatigue (disadvantage on the next ability check).
  • 9. Upon entering a nearby village, the party is asked for a hefty taxation of 5 shekels for ‘protection.’ They can negotiate to reduce it to 3 shekels but must roll a Persuasion check (DC 14).
  • 10. They find an old, broken sword with a significant inscription about the battle against Goliath. This grants them insight (+1 to History checks in future encounters related to past battles).

Somewhat Helpful Encounters (11-15)

  • 11. The party meets a sympathetic villager who provides them with food and water, restoring 2 HP to each party member.
  • 12. They discover a hidden cache of medicinal herbs that allow for healing 1d4 HP when used properly. Knowledge of herbology is necessary (Nature check DC 12).
